Further Reading
  • The subject and handling recall English painting (cf. Bonington, 'Landscape with Timber Waggon', P362). Roqueplan had been a pupil with Bonington in the studio of Gros and, like many French artists of his generation, he was much taken with the freshness and immediacy of much English landscape painting. This watercolour was painted four years after Bonington's death, but the English artist remained influential in France until at least the end of the 1830s.
