  • Bernkastel is in the Rhineland, Germany, between Trier and Koblenz. It is famous for its wine, and the foreground figures in Harding’s watercolour have wicker baskets used for carrying grapes. The artist visited the region in 1834 and 1837. Perhaps painted in the late 1830s, this is a characteristic example of the type of large-scale richly coloured watercolour, produced in emulation of oil painting, which found favour with many artists and collectors in the early Victorian era.
