  • In this watercolour the figures wear mid-seventeenth century costume and the composition is reminiscent of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. The figure of the old lady is derived from an engraving after a lost portrait of Francesca Bridges by Van Dyck. Like many of Bonington’s figurative scenes it is a ‘costume piece’ probably not intended to illustrate a particular literary text but to be evocative of historical and literary associations familiar to many of Bonington’s contemporaries (see also, for example, 'The Antiquary', P672 and 'old Man and Child', P698).
