  • Exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1834. An aga (chief officer in the Ottoman Empire), accompanied by four scribes, reads out a firman (an edict, issued usually by the Sultan) to eight tribal chiefs. This is a particularly fine example of Decamps's mastery of chiaroscuro. Decamps was a great admirer of the work of Rembrandt.
