  • This watercolour was probably painted in 1828, near the end of Bonington's life. After his visit to Venice in 1826 Bonington produced a large number of costume scenes set in sixteenth-century Venice. Here the figures wear sixteenth-century costumes and are reminiscent of those in several Venetian paintings of the sixteenth century, including the frescoes by Titian of 1511 in the Scuola del Santo, Padua, and two paintings by Paolo Veronese: 'The Marriage Feast at Cana' (1562-3; Paris, Louvre) and 'The Supper in the House of Levi' (1573; Venice, Accademia).
