Further Reading
  • This watercolour was probably painted in 1826. The lady wears costume resembling seventeenth-century Dutch dress; the page’s doublet and hose appear to be sixteenth-century Italian. The theme of a lady receiving or writing a letter is common in seventeenth-century Dutch painting (cf. Ter Borch, 'A Lady reading a Letter', P236, and Metsu, 'The Letter Writer Surprised', P240).
