  • Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642), chief minister of Louis XIII, became a frequent subject of paintings after the restoration of the French monarchy in 1815 and the publication of Alfred de Vigny’s novel 'Cinq-Mars' in 1826 (cf. Delaroche, 'Cardinal Richelieu on the Rhône', P320). Richelieu's fondness for cats was referred to by de Vigny in 'Cinq Mars'. See also Robert, 'Cardinal Richelieu', P778).
