  • This watercolour was probably painted in 1826. The figures wear Flemish costume of the 1620s and 1630s. The composition combines elements of two paintings by Anthony van Dyck, the most influential of all artists on English portraiture: 'John of Nassau-Siegen with his Family' (1634; Sussex, Firle Place), engraved in 1761 by Bernard Baron, and 'Portrait of a Lady and Child' (c.1628-32; Paris, Louvre).
