  • Exhibited at the Salon of 1842, this is one of the artist’s largest and best known watercolours. It is perhaps a reminiscence of Smyrna which Decamps had visited in 1828 (see Decamps, 'The Anchorage of Smyrna', P353). As a child Decamps is said to have been unhappy at school and to have frequently played truant.
