  • This watercolour was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1874. The Western or Wailing Wall is essentially part of the platform which supported the Jewish Temple built by Herod the Great c.13 B.C. - A.D. 28 (and destroyed by the Romans A.D. 70). It is the focus of Jewish religious activity in the Old City of Jerusalem. Sir Richard Wallace's acquisition of two watercolours by Harper (see also 'Cairo: from the Nile looking south', P695) may be due to some personal acquaintance with the artist.
