  • The costume of the girl, which also appears in Bonington’s 'Henri IV and the Spanish Ambassador' (P351) and is characteristic of French styles of the early seventeenth century, may have been taken from an engraving by Abraham Bosse (1602-76). The head of the man may derive from an engraving after a portrait of Doge Nicolò da Ponte formerly attributed to Tintoretto or after the late self-portrait by Titian now in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin (cf. Bonington, 'The Antiquary', P672). Probably no specific literary or historical subject was intended by the artist.
