  • Probably painted c.1822 and therefore the earliest of Bonington’s watercolours now in the Wallace Collection, though this does not show his earliest style which was less fluid. Here he has first established the basic outlines in pencil, and then laid in the colours, beginning with the sky, by dragging his brush across the paper, adding layer upon layer of tones before touching in the individual details. This was a challenging technique pioneered by English watercolourists and required great virtuosity. Painted when Bonington was no more than twenty, this watercolour is a excellent demonstration of his precocious talent. Although unidentified, the subject is characteristic of numerous scene on the coast of Normandy and Picardy which Bonington produced during his short career.
