  • Probably painted in the late 1850s. The subject recalls the compositions of Adam Frans van der Meulen (1632-90) who had accompanied Louis XIV on his campaigns in north-eastern France and the Low Countries. This is one of innumerable watercolours by Lami which revel in the gorgeous costumes of the past.
