  • Probably painted in 1825. The inclusion of the central of the three towers of Rouen Cathedral, which had collapsed in 1822, suggests that it was based on earlier studies. This is a morning scene. The composition, with the city seen across a stretch of water past boats and boatmen prominent in the foreground, is characteristic of the English picturesque tradition. Painted about three years after his earliest watercolour in the Wallace Collection, 'Fishing Boats' (P700), this is a much more complex work, demonstrating the considerable development of his skill during this period.
