  • Probably painted in the 1830s, the subject evokes late eighteenth-century prints, particularly those of the 1770s and 1780s by Jean-Michel Moreau, called Moreau le jeune. As such, this is an early example of the nineteenth-century revival of interest in the art of the ancien régime. As his pictures in the Wallace Collection demonstrate, Roqueplan painted a wide range of subjects.
