  • The church of San Giorgio Maggiore, designed by Andrea Palladio, was built in 1566-75. It is seen here from across the Bacino. This watercolour, which is markedly less spontaneous than Stanfield’s other Venetian view in the Wallace Collection, was probably based on a studies made during his visit to Venice in 1830 (see Stanfield, 'Venice: Canal Scene', P667).
