  • Sarah Jennings (1660-1744) married John Churchill, future 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) in 1678. Renowned for her devotion to her husband’s memory (and for her combative personality), she is shown here as a widow. This is one of a series of watercolours made for engraving in Edmund Lodge’s 'Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain', first edition 1821-34 (cf. William Darby, 'The Duke of Wellington', P709). It was copied from a portrait at Blenheim Palace, then believed to be by Sir Peter Lely but attributed by John Ingamells (se Literature), to Maria Verelst c.1725.
