  • Sarah Brunsden (1795-1834) married first in 1814 Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Thomas, who was killed the following year at Waterloo, and second in 1819 Sir John Singleton Copley (1772-1863), son of the painter John Singleton Copley. In 1827 he was created Baron Lyndhurst on his appointment as Lord Chancellor. This watercolour is copied from a portrait by Thomas Lawrence, now in a private collection. Painted in 1827, Lawrence’s portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy the following year and engraved by Samuel Cousins in 1836.
