  • Anne Howard (before 1696-1764), second daughter of the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, married first in 1718 Rich, 5th Viscount Irwin (d.1721), and second in 1737 Colonel William Douglas (d.1748). As the inscription indicates, this watercolour was copied from a portrait by Charles Philips painted in 1738. Philips’s portrait is now untraced. The presence of the watercolour in the Wallace Collection is presumably due to a family connection: the second wife of the 2nd Marquess of Hertford was the daughter of the 9th and last Viscount Irwin (see Downman, 'Isabella, Marchioness of Hertford', P754).
