  • The drawing is typical for Lafrensen's work of the 1780s. His work as a genre painter was based on earlier depictions of Fêtes galantes but transformed them into more openly erotic, often hands-on scenes. This drawing is a good example in the way the couple is shown as not just flirting but also touching. Lafrensen usually stressed a narrative, erotically charged element in his genre scenes.

    The drawing was originally backed with a sheet printed with the schedule of coaches from Paris, dated 7 August 1775, 17 August 1776 and 23 January 1777, and inscribed on the reverse: lawrence/peintre suedois.
