  • Born in Flanders, Giambologna worked for almost the whole of his career in Italy in the service of the Medici. He became the most influential sculptor of his time, famous for his monumental statues and for his elegant small bronze statuettes, which were made in large numbers and disseminated throughout Europe, often as diplomatic gifts. This small figure is the finest of several smaller bronzes associated with Giambologna now in the Wallace Collection and was probably made under the sculptor’s direct supervision.
