  • The tall, slim figure of St John, characteristic of Gothic art, comes from a châsse adorned with champlevé enamel plaques which forms part of the treasury of Rouen Cathedral. (Champlevé is a technique involving pouring liquid enamel into grooves engraved on a metal surface.) The St John was once one of twelve figures of Apostles, set under arches on the sides of the châsse which is in the form of the nave of a church. The châsse was altered in 1776 to receive the relics of St Romanus, at which point this statuette may have been replaced by a cast.
