  • This intriguing object is an ivory walking stick handle, carved to represent a lion, and dateable c.1800. It holds between its forepaws a gold escutcheon (which may have been added later) engraved with the arms of the Seymour-Conway family surmounted by a marquess’s coronet (and therefore of 1793 or later). The 3rd Marquess of Hertford went to Russia in 1827, as an envoy to Tsar Nicholas I, when this object may have been acquired for the Collection.
