  • With its companion medallion of her husband Louis XVI, this medallion of Queen Marie-Antoinette (1755-93) may have been made by Antoine-François Lebrun, who became a Master in 1776. The medallion of Louis XVI, also in the Wallace Collection, is signed F.P. LEBRUN (which might mean fait par [i.e. made by] Lebrun), but there were several goldsmiths with this surname and it is not certain that both medallions are by the same hand. A similar pair, a gift in 1775 from Louis XVI to Haidar Ali (the father of Tipu Sultan) on the occasion of his coronation is in the India Office Collection (now British Library), London.
