  • This urn-shaped vase model derives its name from the star decoration on the lid ('étoile' means 'star' in French), set in a pierced sunburst.
The rectangular panels on both sides are seemingly linked by sculptural chains and painted with Bacchic scenes on the fronts. While on C235 a cherub is eating from a bunch of grapes, and another one offers him a cup of wine, C236 shows the cherub trying to wake his companion who probably fell asleep after finishing the now empty cup beside him.
The back panels show flower arrangements.
The gilt-bronze stands are a later addition from the nineteenth century and probably Eng-lish.
