  • This table, one of a pair, was almost certainly made in Rome, probably not long before being bought by the 1st Marquess of Buckingham in 1774. Although with their ox skulls (bucrania) and classical reliefs they are self-consciously neo-classical, the arched mouldings near the tops of their legs and the acanthus leaves near the bottom are reminiscent of Roman Baroque art. They were bought in Rome by the 1st Marquess of Buckingham and may well be products of a workshop specialising in furniture for wealthy milordi on the Grand Tour.
