  • One of a pair, this table has mid sixteenth-century north Italian supports which are dramatic examples of Renaissance Italian carving, featuring winged female terms flanking masks. The tabletops were probably added in about 1830 and as such, the tables are also important examples of the nineteenth-century revival of interest in Renaissance styles. The tables appear to have been put together in their current form for Bentley Priory, the home of the 2nd Marquess of Abercorn, at whose sale in 1853 the pair was bought by the 4th Marquess of Hertford.
