  • Walter Scott (1771-1832): Scottish novelist, poet and man of letters, created a baronet in 1820. He enjoyed an enormous reputation in his lifetime, not least in France. In 1826 he visited Paris to gather material for his biography of Napoleon (published the following year). He recorded in his journal that on 2 November Mme. de Mirbel begged him to allow her to draw his portrait and he sat to her on each of the following four days. She cried when they parted.
