Works of Art

A pupil of Delaroche, he painted portraits, religious pictures and anecdotal historical scenes, many of a sentimental character. He also achieved considerable popularity as a painter of Orientalist pictures. Among his foreign journeys were five visits to North Africa and the Middle East (between 1853 and 1877). His many public commissions included pictures for the Parisian churches of Saint-Roch, Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois and Saint-Sulpice.
