Works of Art

A Netherlandish artist, he was a member of the Antwerp Guild of S. Luke in 1540. He came to England c. 1545 and his earliest known work is the Turk on horseback (Brocklesby Park) of 1549; thereafter there are a number of dated portraits up to 1570. He was a Court Painter to Mary I, but then fell out of Royal favour until 1572, when he designed the décor and costumes for a fête staged by Elizabeth I.

He is last recorded in 1573 in the employ of the Office of Revels. His name is variously spelt in contemporary documents (e.g. Jan Euworts, Hew Hawarde, etc.).
