A pupil of Léon Cogniet, he painted portraits, scenes from literature and history and contemporary genre subjects, frequently sentimental in character. He enjoyed considerable success with wealthy collectors, including many Americans, and he was also patronised by the duc de Morny, half-brother of Napoleon III.
