Born on the 25 July 1745 in Newcastle-under-Lyme he was a strolling actor for some years. He came to London in 1775 and practised as a miniature painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy 1776-1802.

In 1786 he set up in Fleet Street as a print and bookseller with his brother, Edward; they published several illustrated works, including the Biographical Mirrour (two volumes, 1795 and 1798) for which Sylvester made water-colour copies of historical portraits.

He died in London on 12 August 1809.
