Etienne-Jean Chabry (*1749)
Works of Art

Painter, gilder and burnisher, op. 1764 - 1787.

Son of a sculpteur at Vincennes. He entered the factory in June 1764 specializing during the 1760s and 1770s in pastoral or rustic scenes after Boucher and coloured reserves of cherubs in landscapes, a form of decoration he may have introduced. He worked as a gilder for periods of up to a month, frequently adding gilding to his own painted decoration, and as a burnisher.

In 1787, presumably discouraged by continuing low pay and increasingly menial duties, he left the factory to set up as a grocer in the village of Sèvres. He married Jeanne-Elisabeth Lagneau and through the marriages of his sisters, became brother-in-law to the Sèvres painters Dodin and Choisy.
