  • Primer, of gilt bronze, flat and circular in form, the front embossed and chased with a representation of Mucius Scaevola before King Porsenna, within a circular wreath; the back engraved with arabesque ornament, in the centre of which a shield over the upper edge of which has been engraved a coronet and below that a Tau cross between six balls, per pale 3 and 3, the edge engraved at the top with the name:

    Portuguese or Spanish, about 1560.

Primer, A1295, bears the same composition on the front. The funnel of A1296 differs in being engraved with a chevronny pattern.

There are many families of the name of de Castro; those of Amsterdam, Portugal, Castille and one of the Argonese families, bear six balls. Rietsap records none with a Tau cross in addition. The 1962 catalogue suggested that the device refered to the de Castro family of Portugal.
