  • Musket rest with concealed blade, comprised of a steel U-shaped head, the forks of octagonal section and terminating in lions' heads, socket with moulded neck, the whole overlaid with fine scrollwork in gold. Hollow steel staff covered with modern dark red velvet; it contains a concealed blade of stiff diamond section, which can be ejected by giving the haft a sharp forward jerk, whereupon it springs out of the head through an opening otherwise concealed by a hinged cover. It is then held by a spring-catch which engages in a slot at the neck. The ferrule at the bottom of the haft is missing, which reduces its original length by some eighteen inches.

    Italian, about 1600.
