  • This is one of the few pieces of hard-paste porcelain in our collection. Hard-paste wares were not introduced at Sèvres until the late 1760s, gradually superseding the more complex and time-consuming soft-paste technique, which the manufactory had perfected during the 1740s.

    Named after its designer Louis-Simon Boizot (op. 1773-1809), this splendid vase has laurel-crowned cherubs emerging from pilasters – a motif which might have been inspired by an engraved design from Jacques Stella’s ‘Livre de Vases’ from 1667 and appears in an earlier design by Boizot for a chimney-piece made for Madame du Barry.

    The cherubs flank two astrology-themed gilt-bronze medallions on the sides and clocks by clockmaker Louis Montjoye on the front and back. Clock vases were introduced at Sèvres from 1764 and became increasingly popular in the late 1770s. Decorated with a pale green dotted ‘pointillé’ ground, the rich gilding is in three colours, adding depth to the sculptural details.

    The elaborate gilt-bronze stand with porcelain plaques may be contemporary to the vase.
