  • This candlestick and its pair (F79) derive from the model of infant shown on the 'Chandeliers de sculpture en argent' of 1728, depicted in three engravings in the 'Oeuvre' of Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750). A version of Meissonnier's design is also depicted as a wax model on a shelf behind the sitters in de Largillière's portrait of Thomas Germain and his wife in the Gulbenkian Museum. Three variants of this model are known, and this one appears to date from the 1740s; a 'crowned C' stamp is stamped on various examples, including this pair, denoting that they were sold between 1745 and 1749.
