  • One of a pair (with F168). Their early nineteenth-century dating is based on the candleholders, the design of which dates from the Restoration. In other respects, but with small variations, they are the same model as a pair of eighteenth-century candlesticks in the Wallace Collection (F166-7) which were modelled and cast by Etienne Martincourt (active 1763-1791). Thus the models may well have passed through various workshops, and continued to be used even in the second half of the nineteenth century (see commentary for F166-7). When the 4th Marquess of Hertford acquired this pair, he believed them to be eighteenth-century.
