  • This huge vase, one of a pair (with F365) appears to have been influenced by Ancient Roman models with deep-cut grooved decoration and entwined serpent handles. It may have been carved in Rome in the first half of the seventeenth century when the technique for carving porphyry had been rediscovered and the fashion for porphyry meant that ‘new’ vases were carved from old porphyry.
