  • This coffer and stand was displayed as a pair with another in the Wallace Collection (F412) by Sir Richard Wallace but in fact there are subtle differences in the construction and decorative finish of the two which indicate that this piece probably dates from about sixty years later when there was a considerable revival in the popularity of furniture by André-Charles Boulle (who had died in 1732).

    Both stands have been altered in the nineteenth century, with the addition of the crowned vases on the stretchers. F412 was exhibited at Bethnal Green (1872-75) where the description made explicit reference to the fleur de lys ornament and the royal crown, thus giving it a supposed royal provenance.
