  • Gustavus III (1746-92) was King of Sweden from 1771 until his assassination at a masked ball in 1792. The King is shown wearing armour and the cloak of the Order of the Seraphim, a Swedish royal order initiated by King Frederick in 1748, only awarded to the royal family and foreign heads of state.

The portrait is signed and dated ‘Coteau’ on the right-hand edge. Jean Coteau (c. 1739-after 1812) was born in Geneva, and specialised in painting enamel miniatures. He may have been the ‘Coteau’ recorded at the Royal Manufactory at Sèvres from 1780-1784.
