History
  • The subjects painted on the outside of this pendant include St Hubert and the stag and St George and the dragon. On the inside are twenty-five miniature scenes of the life and Passion of Christ. The Crucifixion of Christ is on the panel on the right, in the right hand column, third from the bottom.

This object was probably made especially for the owner, who identified in some way with the saints depicted on the outside, and who wanted to contemplate the life of Christ as they opened the pendant. The minute, intimate scale of this object may have helped the owner to develop a closer connection with Christ's suffering. The act of examining the tiny scenes may also have aided worship by requiring deep concentration.
