  • Raffaele Monti, born at Iseo in Italian Switzerland, came to England in the late 1840s and exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and at the Royal Academy between 1853 and 1860. His Veiled Vestal (now at Compton Place, Eastbourne), sculpted for the Duke of Devonshire, gained him immediate fame, and thereafter he was best known for his remarkably illusionistic veiled figures. This sculpture is a reduced version of his Circassian Slave in the Market-place at Constantinople (present location unknown) which was shown at the Great Exhibition. Circassia is a region north-east of modern Turkey.
