This is one of a series of watercolours made for engraving in Edmund Lodge’s 'Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain', published in 1835 (second edition). According to an inscription on the verso it was painted in 1834 from two sources: the head from a chalk drawing by Thomas Lawrence and the figure from a picture by William Evans of Eton (1798-1877).
