Born on 29 September 1815 in Kassel, he studied in the Düsseldorf Academy. He painted mainly Rhineland villages, Norwegian landscapes and North Sea coast scenes, much influenced by Dutch seventeenth-century painting. He died in Düsseldorf in April 1910.
