During conservation of the stand of F46 in 1997 it became evident that both were products of the second quarter of the nineteenth century. The back panels, lined with looking glass, appeared to be original to the stands and the drawer sides were thicker than would normally be expected on an eighteenth-century drawer. A nineteenth-century dating would explain the eclectic character of the mounts, some derived from Boulle, some from the Louis XV and early-neoclassical periods and others from the late-Louis XVI period. Boulle furniture was very popular with collectors in the 19th century in both France and England, both in its original 18th-century form and in reproductions and pastiches. When the 4th Marquess of Hertford acquired these coffers and stands from the sale of the collection of the 12th Earl of Pembroke in 1851 they were catalogued as being 'finest old boule', which suggests that by then they were considered to be 18th century.
