Born in Saint Lô, a pupil of Isabey, Regnault and Aubry. He is credited with producing a large number of the portraits of Napoleon I which emanated from Isabey’s studio. He became miniature painter to Charles X. He was one of the earlier 19th-century collectors of French rococo painting and fifteen works by Watteau were included in his sale in 1846; see also M186 and M193 which belonged to him. He died in Saint Lô.
