  • Murat, seen here wearing the uniform of Marshal of the Empire, married in 1800 Napoleon's sister Caroline Bonaparte (see Aubry, 'Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples', M4). He was King of Naples 1808-14. With his wife he conspired with Austria to retain their throne after Napoleon's defeat at Leipzig, but their intrigues were ultimately unsuccessful and in 1815 Murat was executed.
