  • Julie Amélie Charlotte Castelnau (1819–1897), later Lady Wallace, was born in Paris. She and Richard Wallace married in 1871, after over thirty years together. While little is known about her personal interest in art, she certainly shared Wallace’s commitment to philanthropy. In England, she experienced social animosity, largely due to her humble origins, reluctance to speak English, shyness, and the fact that she and Wallace had an illegitimate son, born in 1840 (d. 1887). Yet, after her husband’s death, it was she who, in 1897, bequeathed the celebrated art collection kept at Hertford House to the British nation.
