  • One of the foremost artists of the second generation of Dutch Italianate landscape painters, Both trained in Utrecht 1634-7. He then joined his brother Andries in Rome 1638-41, and became friends with the landscapists Herman van Swanevelt and Claude, with whom he collaborated in 1638-9 and 1640-1. Probably produced in the mid 1640s, this work is typical of Jan Both’s Italianate landscapes. Having trained in his native Utrecht, Both spent several years working in Rome. His subsequent landscapes are based on the studies and drawings he brought back from Italy. In the Netherlands, he collaborated with several other artists including Jan Weenix, and greatly influenced the third generation of Dutch Italianate painters, including Willem de Heusch and Jan Hackaert.
